Stars of the week
Each week in our Friday Celebration Assembly, we celebrate our stars of the week. Each class teacher chooses 2 children from their class each week who have really impressed them. Here are the children who have been chosen this week.
Nursery
In school we are always looking for children who have shown that they have used our school learning powers in their learning; Be Courageous, Be Collaborative, Be Determined and Be Responsible. This week our stars have been picked because they have been spotted using the Mayflower learning powers.
Eliza always shows determination and perseverance when she is met with a challenge, for example, she has done some excellent writing this week where she chose to push herself beyond what the adult had asked of her. She demonstrates strong collaborative skills when she works with her peers, especially in the creative area! On our Spring walk this week Eliza has shown how she can be a responsible member of school by respecting our school outdoor environment. Well done Eliza!
Bella demonstrates determination and perseverance in the care that she takes in her work, for example, she has done some excellent art work this week where she has used good observation skills and taken her time to complete her work. She works well collaboratively with her peers, building and telling stories in our small world area. On our Spring walk this week Bella had some lovely ideas and has shown how she can be a responsible member of school by respecting our school outdoor environment. Well done Bella!
Reception
This week’s first star of the week has shown amazing effort and a determined attitude towards their learning. Even when things felt a bit tricky or when it was hard to stay focused, they kept trying their best and didn’t give up. He has tried so hard in drawing club, writing a sentence about animal habitats. It has been lovely to see him join in more and listen more carefully during carpet time and activities. Well done Kaius 🙂
Our second star of the week has shown lots of courage! He has come into school this week independently and with a big smile. He has shown resilience to try new things even when he hasn't been too sure at first but still had a go and tried his best. Well done Archie 🙂
Year 1
This week we have been thinking about how we use our Learning Powers:
Sylvi uses determination in bucketloads! Once she begins a task, she always wants to see it through to completion. She always strives to do her very best, and if this means starting again to make improvements, that is what she does! This determination has resulted in her making great progress in her reading and writing. We are so proud of you, Sylvi!
Oscar embraces our learning powers: he is always determined to finish his task to the best of his ability; he is eager to work collaboratively with others and learn together; he shows courage when attempting things he finds difficult and daunting; but he always takes responsibility for his own learning and is making amazing progress. Thank you for being so wonderful, Oscar!
Year 2
This week’s Stars of the Week are two children who always show what it means to do things ‘The Mayflower Way’. They are both fantastic role models, both in and out of our classroom. They show kindness and consideration to all and are always happy to work collaboratively with others. They set a wonderful example to everyone around them and make our classroom a lovely place to learn. Over the past few weeks, both Holly and Aaron have particularly impressed us with their effort, determination, and courage in their learning.
Holly has really impressed us in maths, showing real courage when learning about fractions. Even when the learning became tricky, she kept going and showed great determination to understand. It has been wonderful to see her confidence grow and her knowledge shine through. Well done, Holly - keep up the amazing work.
Aaron has really impressed us with his writing. He has shown great courage and determination, working hard to create an amazing piece of writing on The Great Fire of London. He has also taken great pride in how his work is written and presented. It has been fantastic to see the progress he is making and the effort he is putting into his learning. Well done, Aaron - keep up the brilliant work!
Year 3
Henry has worked incredibly hard this week. He has been an excellent partner when working collaboratively in Computing lessons and he has been a great support for other children in class. He has shown real determination during the assessments that have taken place this week and has carefully checked and re-checked his work to make sure he has done his best. Well done, Henry!
Evie has shown real determination during the assessments this week. Her focus and concentration were fantastic and it was a real pleasure to watch her use the skills she has learned in class when completing her arithmetic work. Evie has put a huge amount of effort into her humanities work this week with great results. Evie's confidence this week has grown and she even said herself that she was 'smashing it' which we fully agree with. Well done, Evie!
Year 4
Our school learning powers are ‘be courageous, be collaborative, be determined and be responsible’. Each day at Mayflower, the children challenge themselves to do these things.
This week, as always, Laroti has embodied our learning powers perfectly. He has shown real courage and determination, facing assessments with a positive attitude and embracing these challenges willingly. He has impressed all of the adults in Year 4 with his skills of collaboration. This week, we have witnessed Laroti working collaboratively with a peer, ensuring that they felt valued and heard. Laroti - you are a star!
I have been really impressed with the progress that Leo has made in all areas of the curriculum. Leo has come to school this week determined to succeed in all that he does. He has shown how responsible he is as a learner, choosing to move seats in the classroom to aid his concentration. Leo has tried hard in all of his assessments and continued to show resilience and positivity at all times.
Year 5
Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'" — Mary Anne Radmacher
Layla is a responsible member of the class who approaches tasks thoughtfully. She takes pride in her work, follows instructions carefully, and can be relied upon to complete tasks to a high standard. She shows courage when trying new challenges and is determined to keep going even when learning becomes difficult. Layla also collaborates well with her classmates, sharing ideas and supporting others during group activities. Keep up the hard work!!
Daniel shows courage when approaching new or challenging learning experiences. He is a determined learner who perseveres when faced with difficulties and shows a positive attitude towards improving his skills. In addition, Daniel works well with others and is a collaborative member of the class, contributing thoughtful ideas and supporting his peers during group activities. Keep up the hard work!!
Year 6
This week in school, we have been focusing on our important Mayflower Learning Powers: Be Responsible; Be Courageous; Be Determined; and Be Collaborative. These are a focus everyday in school and this week our Stars of the Week have been chosen with this in mind.
Jack has shown real determination this week in all lessons across the curriculum, particularly writing. He worked so hard when writing a formal piece based on our class text, When the Sky Falls, producing a fantastic final piece that he should be immensely proud of. He has proven himself to be a collaborative learner in all aspects of school: he has worked well with others this week to conduct a science investigation into the effect of exercise on pulse rate and he has been collaborative with some of our younger children in school during break times and lunch times. I have seen real determination, courage and collaboration this week Jack and this has made me smile - keep it up!
Hermione has shown real courage and determination this week in her work across the curriculum, particularly in her maths work. She has adopted a 'can do' attitude in this area of the curriculum and as a result, I have seen real progress in her learning, of which she should be immensely proud. She has shown collaboration when working as part of a group to complete a science investigation into the effect of exercise on pulse rate, managing the difficulties associated with group work well and supporting others in her group when they needed it. I am loving your new-found confidence this week Hermione and I think you are starting to realise how amazing you are!
Headteacher Award & Shout Outs
Each week in our Celebration Assembly, Mrs Powell chooses someone who has really impressed her during the week and presents them with her Headteacher Award. Our school learning powers are ‘be courageous, be collaborative, be determined and be responsible’. Each day at Mayflower, we ask the children to challenge themselves to do these things. My superstar award today goes to someone who demonstrates this every day. They challenge themselves to always give their best and live the ethos and values of school each day. Well done Bethany (Yr1)! Your hard work and determination does not go unnoticed.
My ‘shout-outs’ for giving 100% to the MAYFLOWER WAY this week go to Scout (Rec), Kaius (Rec), Erin-Mae (Y1), Louis T (Y2), Fox (Y2), Cole (Y2) and Natalie (Y5). Well done!
Makaton Sign Of The Week
The children are continuing to learn Makaton's 'Sign of the week' each week. Each Monday, the children learn the new sign for that week. We thought it would be useful to share the following week's sign with parents/carers on our Friday blog so you can get involved too if you wish.
Parents Evening
Parents evening for this term will take place on Wednesday 25th March in our lower hall. The appointments are now available to book on School Spider. Places do fill up fast, so please ensure that if you haven't yet booked your appointment you book as early as possible to secure your preferred appointment time.
If your child has a Special Educational Need, separate meetings are usually organised for this outside of the parents evening appointments. If this is the case, your child's teacher should be in touch regarding this.

Easter Church Service
Next Tuesday 17th March, Year 1 to Year 6 will be walking to St Nicholas's Church in Bawtry after morning registration for our Easter Service. Thank you to those who have already volunteered to join us to walk to and from the church and join in the service with us. If you would still like to volunteer, please let the school office know. For those who will be joining us on Tuesday, please come to the school office once you have taken your child to class. We are usually back at school for approx 11am after the service has finished.
Rocksteady Concert Wednesday 18th March 2pm
We are really looking forward to our next Rocksteady concert of this school year, which takes place next Wednesday 18th March starting at 2pm. The children have been working incredibly hard and it will be a real treat to watch them showcase their learning.
If your child currently takes part in the Rocksteady sessions that are held in school and you will be attending the concert, please ensure you arrive at the school office in plenty of time to sign in so that the concert can start as close to 2pm as possible.
Down Syndrome Day Sunflower Challenge
To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on 21st March, we are taking part in Down Syndrome UK's Sunflower Challenge. Each class will be planting and caring for some sunflower seeds; we will be watching the sunflowers grow during the countdown to World Down Syndrome Day and beyond.
We will share some updates on our sunflowers on future blogs.
PTA's 'Gifts for a loved one' shop
Today, our PTA held their 'Gifts for a loved one' shop. As always, there was a fantastic choice of gifts of varying prices for the children to choose from - in fact they were spoilt for choice! We hope their loved ones are pleased with their gifts and hope that the children enjoyed their gifts that they bought for themselves too.
Thank you to our PTA members and extra helpers for their work beforehand and at the shop itself. We had some members of Bawtry WI helping this morning too, which was lovely. We hope you all know how much your support is valued. We say it all the time, but it is true - without the support of our PTA, their helpers and our families whose children come to these events we would not be able to provide the 'extras' which are so valuable for our children.

Thank You
Thank you to Bob Anderson, Ken Guest and Lee Sammut, ward councillors for Bawtry and Rossington who recently secured funding for us to have a skip in school. There were lots of cupboards and areas in school that needed a really good tidy up and declutter. We recycled everything we could and then anything that couldn't be recycled was added to the skip. It was surprising how much there was once we got started and we managed to fill the full skip!
